Future Trends of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM)

11 May, 2026 8 share

In April 2026, four Chinese authorities including the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued policies to promote wide-range PMSM and direct-drive motors, upgrading the energy efficiency threshold for industrial motors to IE4 standard. The target is to achieve over 60% penetration of industrial PMSM by 2028, with an overall energy saving of 15%–20% and phasing out low-efficiency traditional motors.

Domestically, PMSM is developing towards ultra-high speed, variable flux, low/rare-earth-free and electromechanical integration. It has been widely applied in new energy vehicles, industrial equipment and rail transit, with flat wire oil cooling, SiC electronic control and 8-in-1 electric drive as industry standards. Chinese-made motors are among the world’s top tier in speed, power density and energy efficiency.

Overseas, the EU has implemented strict IE5 energy efficiency standards. Europe, America, Japan and South Korea focus on rare-earth-free technology, high-end servo systems and ultra-high speed integrated electric drives, focusing on new energy vehicles, marine electrification and industrial automation.

The global industry consensus is clear: high efficiency, energy conservation, rare-earth-free development and integrated intelligence will be the core trends of PMSM, with traditional asynchronous motors being gradually replaced and PMSM embracing long-term development dividends.
